John Michael Lopes, age 85, passed away peacefully at Bethany Home in Ripon, California, on July 25, 2017, after a 2 ½ year hiatus from his beloved game of golf.

John was born at the family dairy in Manteca on December 16, 1931. He spent his early years working on the dairy at home while excelling in school.  He graduated from Manteca High School in 1950, attended Modesto Junior College, and then joined the United States Navy.  John served time aboard a naval destroyer during the Korean Conflict.

After being discharged from the Navy, John attended San Jose State to complete his engineering degree.  He worked as a Civil Engineer for California Department of Transportation for 38 years.  Some of John’s design projects are included in today’s Livingston Bypass, the Carson Spur, and the Stockton Crosstown Freeway.  John retired as a Senior Engineer in 1994 after a 38 year career.

John loved the outdoors and during his lifetime he enjoyed fishing and hunting.  He made many camping trips possible for his young family.  With his wife of 58 years, Joyce, he traveled for pleasure and new golf experiences.

John leaves behind his devoted wife, Joyce, daughter Lisa Lopes (Lammert Van Laar), granddaughter Lauren Clemons (husband John), and grandson Alec Fromm (wife Delaney).  He also leaves behind caring sister-in-laws Sylvia Lopes (the late James Lopes) and Lois Moss (Richard Faria) as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

PL Fry & Son Funeral Home is honored to serve the Lopes family.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 3:00pm to 6:00pm at PL Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Road, Manteca.  A Prayer Service will be held in his honor on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at 10:00am also held at P.L. Fry and Son. John will be laid to rest at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery, 17871 S. Carrolton Road, Escalon.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bethany Home Foundation, 930 West Main Street, Ripon, CA 95366, or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 742030, Los Angeles, CA 90074.  An online guestbook is available at www.plfryandson.com for condolences.
