Gerda Heidemarie Foxworth, age 79, entered into rest in Manteca, California in the presence of her family on December 24, 2021.
Born in Heidelberg, Germany on October 5, 1942 to Leonhard Hempel and Sophia (Strauss) Hempel, Gerda married Raymond Foxworth on August 16, 1962. She accompanied her husband on his military travels, living in Germany, Georgia, Washington and California. Wherever life took her, she was happiest at home surrounded by family.

Gerda had a generous heart, and preferred to work quietly behind the scenes. Over the years she volunteered with Boy Scouts, Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, a soup kitchen, in a nursing home, and at Church of the Good Shepherd. Her family tells how she found out a neighbor had a new immigrant family living in the backyard after they arrived to the United States with next to nothing, and she spontaneously gave them her furniture to make them more comfortable.

Despite her sweet and giving nature, she had a bit of a competitive streak, and loved to play bingo, gin rummy, slot machines and a cutthroat game of Mensch ärgere Dich nicht.

Gerda’s goal-oriented personality led her to begin college after her family was grown, making new friends and giving of her time to tutor fellow classmates in English and Algebra for free. She graduated from Hartnell College at age 53 as the Class of 2003 valedictorian.

Gerda is survived by her husband, Raymond Foxworth, and her sons, David Foxworth of Manteca and Brian Foxworth of Menifee She is also survived by her daughter-in-laws, Kate Rubke-Foxworth of Menifee and Rebecca Foxworth of Manteca, her sister Brigitte Vierling of Heidelberg, Germany, and several grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday, January 24, 2021 at 10:00 AM at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N Union Rd., Manteca. A livestream of the service will also be available online.
