John Michael (Sollemi) Monti was born in Manteca, California on August 8, 1927 to John and Mary Sollemi. Being the youngest of 7 children, John was known for being mischievous and Mama’s favorite. He attended Summer Home School until he moved with his family to Oakland, California in 1941. He started to attend Castlemont High School at the age of 14 and graduated at the age of 16 in 1944. With his parents’ permission he then enlisted in the Merchant Marines and served in World War II. In 1948, John met his wife Virginia, and they married in 1950. Together they shared a loving marriage of 49 ½ years and started a family; John Jr born in 1952 and Terri Ann born in 1953.

Always the entrepreneur, John and Virginia embarked on many adventures together. They bought their first restaurant in Oakland, CA called Lot-A-Burger. He went on to buy 3 more restaurants in San Francisco, CA. Then he opened, Monti’s Steakhouse in San Leandro, CA near the Bay Fair Mall. In 1958, they moved from Oakland, CA to Hayward, CA; then settling in Fremont in 1971 where they lived until Virginia’s passing in 2000. Together John and Ginny loved to host their family and friends at their house throwing Family Reunions and their famous New Year Eve Party.

In 2004, John met his second wife Donna Azevedo, and they married in 2005. Donna’s son Mark and his family quickly became wonderful additions to John’s life. Wanting to live retirement in a slower paced community, they moved back to Manteca, CA in 2006. Together they enjoyed long drives, RVing, and time with family and friends. They remained together until Donna’s passing in 2019.

John was constantly reinventing himself and had many different jobs throughout his life. Depending on when you met him or knew him, he may have been a truck driver, mechanic, cook, restauranter, packaging engineer, warehouse manager, or union arbitrator. John enjoyed being social and participated in bowling leagues and golfing regularly until he was 90 years old.

There was nothing more important to John than his family. John has 4 grandchildren (Joseph, Sean, Sara, & Michael), 5 bonus grandchildren (Katie, Rachel, Angel. Ariane, Stephanie), 8 Great Grandchildren, and 12 bonus Great Grandchildren.
