Lillian Estelle Machado, a prominent landowner in Manteca, passed peacefully surrounded by her large, loving family in her home on Thursday, January 20, at age 90. She joins her husband, Joe J. Machado, and their oldest son, Joseph J. ‘Joey’ Machado, Jr. in heaven.

Lillian (known to her friends as ‘Lil’) was the middle daughter of Arthur and Marion Fern (Cook) Gormsen, born in Stockton, California on April 17, 1931. Lillian married Joe on January 21, 1951, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Stockton. After she married, she moved to the home ranch in Manteca, where she worked side-by-side with Joe as they built their dairy farm into a thriving and dynamic business.

Lillian’s greatest joy was spending time with her large family, often tasked with cooking massive spreads for the extended family when her children were younger. She was musically-inclined – as a young child harmonizing with her younger sister, playing piano as a young girl, and later having such a robust whistle that she could call in both the kids and the cattle at will. Lillian had a renowned green thumb - able to cultivate any plant placed in her care and meticulously tended to her lush gardens. She had an adventurous side – traveling on ‘once in a lifetime’ trips through the Mediterranean, Panama Canal, and Brazil, water skiing, and hitting the dollar slot machines when the mood struck her (Lucky Lil!) Closer to home, Joe and Lillian enjoyed their weekend getaways to Monterey where they were ‘regulars,’ because to know Lillian was to be a friend of hers as she had an uncanny ability to make people feel heard and acknowledged. She was a caring and generous wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother – a matriarch in every sense of the word.

She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings, and son, Joey. She is survived by her loving children, daughter and son-in-law Joanne and Bruce Kimbrough of Tracy, daughter and son-in-law Janet and Daryl Dyk of Manteca, daughter Judy Machado of Manteca, daughter and son-in-law Jayne and Randy Branscum of Manteca, son and daughter-in-law John and Zita Machado of Manteca, their nine grandchildren, Amy Bavaro of Escalon, Daryl Dyk of Ripon, Rachel Kimbrough of Los Angeles, Ryan Dyk of Farmington, Alexia Mark of New York, Jayde Tuers of Modesto, Chyna Bear, John Machado, Rayna Branscum all of Manteca, and seventeen great-grandchildren (with the eighteenth arriving any day).

Visitation will be held Sunday, January 30, from 2 p.m. with a Rosary following at 4 p.m. at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home, 290 N. Union Road, Manteca. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Monday, January 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 505 E. North Street, Manteca. Burial will be private.
