Susan Dione Dodson, 61, entered into rest on September 17, 2017 in Manteca. She was born in Stockton on December 8, 1955 to the late Russell and Harriet Carter Sr. Susan leaves behind her siblings, Steven Carter of Stockton and Russell “Rusty” Carter Jr. and wife Robin of Manteca. She was blessed with three nieces and nephews: Ryan Cater and wife Carrie Ann, Jack Carter and wife Jessica and Erin Brais and husband Joey. In addition she has three grandnephews - Xavier Brais, Joey Brais and Henry Carter. 

Susan grew up in Manteca, graduating from Manteca High School in 1974. She then attended Sacramento State University, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Welfare. Her professional life began in the Human Services Department of San Joaquin County. Over a career spanning 30 years, her strong work ethic was rewarded as she eventually attained the position of Deputy Director of Human Services in both Calaveras and Shasta Counties.

In 2009, Susan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS).  However, in spite of this misfortune, she continued to work and be active. After retiring, she founded the first MS support group in Manteca, as well as spearheading the MS Yoga class in Manteca. Susan remained active in local MS groups, becoming an excellent fundraiser and organizer for the annual MS Walk in Modesto. 

Susan’s personal activities included playing bridge with friends at Spring Creek Golf and Country Club, as well as participating in Toast Masters of Manteca. She was also known for her fine baking, creating wonderful pies for family and friends. Her service dog Ali, a beautiful yellow Labrador retriever, was her loyal companion for life. Susan will be remembered for her indomitable strength of spirit in the face of many adversities in life. Her friendship was a cornerstone in many people’s lives and she will be deeply missed.
