James (Jim) Perez was born in San Francisco, California on January 14, 1923.  He passed away on February 24, 2017 at the age of 94.  He was raised in Fairfield and graduated from Armijo High School.  Jim moved to Manteca in 1953 where he opened a grocery store called The Food Bank. He was a merchant here for over 30 years and also owned and operated Jim’s Liquors, Jim and Art’s Liquors, and House of Spirits.

Jim was a veteran of World War II where he served in the U. S. Navy.  He was very proud of his service and told many great stories about his experiences in the war. He was married to his wife, Sally Perez, in 1946. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Best known for his constant smile and hearty laugh, Jim had many friends.  He loved all sports but especially the Giants and 49ers. He was an avid golfer and fisherman in his younger days.  Jim was an member of St. Anthony’s Church and active in the YMI.  Win or lose, he loved to go the casinos with his sons and grandsons. Of course, his smile was biggest when they won!

Jim has five children: Melanie Ota (Cal) of Stockton, James Edward Perez (Ramona) of Lebanon, Oregon, Dennis Perez (Stephanie) of Manteca, Celeste Harris (Dino) of Manteca, and Karen Harrison (Allen) of Salida. He has twelve grandchildren: Ryan Harris, Krista Harris, Jason Harris, Megan Harrison, James S. Perez, Aimee Nicewonger, Sarah West, Dennis Shane Perez, Kimiko Walker, Masako Ciani, Lawrence Ota, and Kenji Ota.  Jim also has sixteen great-grandchildren.  He was loved by all.

Visitation will be at P.L. Fry & Son Funeral Home on Sunday March 5th from 1:00-5:00 with the rosary to follow at 5:00.  His funeral service will be held at St.  Anthony’s Church on Monday March 6th at 11:00, and burial will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.  Following these services a celebration of Jim’s life will be held at Chez Shari.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Anthony’s YMI.
